This is a fabulous weekend challenge trekking almost 25 miles through a beautiful stretch of southern chalk downs. Starting near the 3000-year-old White Horse of Uffington, we walk through shady woodland, grassy meadows and open rolling hills, dotted with Iron Age hill forts, sarsen stones and ancient burial mounds. Legends link this area to King Arthur and St George. There are plenty of hilly stretches but our efforts are rewarded by wonderful views across the beautiful rural countryside.
Our goal is the prehistoric stone circle of Avebury, one of the largest in Europe, where there is time to enjoy the amazing atmosphere of this World Heritage Site, or walk to the famous Silbury Hill nearby.
Guide Itinerary:
- DAY 1: Arrive campsite near Marlborough; group meal and briefing
- DAY 2: Rolling hills as we trek from Uffington among beautiful landscapes of the Ridgeway
- DAY 3: Shorter day but some stiff climbs as we head via Barbury Castle hill fort towards Avebury
