The Millennium Development Goals

Hope for Children, along with many other NGO's and governments of the world are committed to supporting the Millennium Development Goals.
The MDG's represent a global partnership that has grown from the commitments and targets established at the world summits of the 1990s. Responding to the world's main development challenges and to the calls of civil society, the MDG's promote poverty reduction, education, maternal health, gender equality, and aim at combating child mortality, AIDS and other diseases.

Set for the year 2015, the MDG's are an agreed set of goals that can be achieved if all actors work together and do their part. Poor countries have pledged to govern better, and invest in their people through health care and education. Rich countries have pledged to support them, through aid, debt relief, and fairer trade. Hope for Children are proud to be working toward achieving these goals.

That you can join existing networks to help. Many large organizations are already working on poverty issues, and supporting them is one way to build support for the Goals. Promote gender equality and empower women

About 900 million people are estimated to live in slum-like conditions characterized by insecure tenure, inadequate housing, and a lack of access to water or sanitation.

The Millennium Project recommends that developing country governments should craft and implement the MDG-based poverty reduction strategies in transparent and inclusive processes, working closely with civil society organizations, the domestic private sector, and international partners. Eleven million children below age five still die every year from preventable causes - about 30,000 a day.

Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

Develop a global partnership for development

Developing country governments should adopt development strategies bold enough to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets for 2015. We term them MDG-based poverty reduction strategies. To meet the 2015 deadline, we recommend that all countries have these strategies in place by 2006. Where Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (PRSPs) already exist, those should be aligned with the MDGs. [Source: The Millennium Project,2005]
