HOPE Teams up with US Charity HOPERUNS in support of children in Kenya
How 7 runs in 7 continents in 7 weeks will bring a long term benefit to disadvantaged children

About 777 - UK donors can donate here

The Hope Runs 777 is an endurance running challenge: 7 marathons on 7 continents in 7 weeks in 2010. This Guinness World Record breaking endeavor will push our team members to their personal limits with the goal of bringing fundraising and awareness to the AIDS orphans of East Africa. At Hope Runs, we run with the children. With the 777 Challenge, we can run for the children.

Hope Runs uses running as a primary community builder in areas where structured after school activities and comprehensive programs in athletics are unheard-of luxuries. Using the enthusiasm, health, and community that grows from the running project, Hope Runs then implements programming in health, the arts, community development, social entrepreneurship, and education to make sure these children succeed in their lives beyond the home.

Hope Runs grew out of a marathon training program in a Kenyan orphanage. Since that time, school performance among the runners is up, disciplinary action is down, and no one is telling us that "girls can't run." The kids have now competed in more than ten races from 5-42km in both Kenya and Tanzania, and they are still going strong.

The 777 Challenge was a great way to combine the love of running that is central to our work with a platform that brings an understanding of the challenges these AIDS orphans face everyday. Raising both funding and awareness for the cause of these children, the 777 Challenge represents a sacrifice, dedication and commitment by the team that many have said is impossible. But we hear that word a lot.

People also say these kids’ beating the odds to have healthy, productive lives is impossible. We simply consider that untrue. And so 777 is going to show everyone–including our kids–exactly how far commitment and perseverance can take you.

In the months leading up to the January 2010 start date, our team will train and share the story of their efforts with their communities as they work toward both fundraising and endurance goals. Their work benefits the orphanages of Hope Runs, which works to equip orphaned and vulnerable children with the tools they need to break out of the cycle of poverty.

The team aims to shatter numerous previous Guinness World Records, including:
For women:
Fastest combined time for a woman to complete 7 marathons on 7 continents
- Combined Running time of 7 marathons in 7 continents
- Youngest woman to complete 7 marathons in 7 continents
|
For men:
- Combined Running time of 7 marathons in 7 continents
- Youngest man to complete 7 marathons in 7 continents
|
Who Does it Benefit?
|
Orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) represent one of the most disenfranchised populations in our world today. UNICEF reported in 2007 that in Sub-Saharan Africa alone there are an estimated 53 million children who have lost their parents to poverty, disease and conflict - leaving an entire generation of young people at the risk of reaching adulthood without the preparation they need to one day uplift and transform the struggling communities of their continent. While this population is poised to exacerbate the problems that have devastated countless communities in Africa, HOPE RUNS believes that with the right resources and opportunities, OVC can become a primary resource in Africa's fight toward a more equitable, prosperous, and peaceful future. |
HOPE RUNS (www.HopeRuns.org) is a US 501c3 non-profit organization operating in East Africa to address the pressing needs of orphaned and vulnerable children in this region. HOPE RUNS partners with AIDS orphanages to provide extracurricular programming in athletics for children, which has helped improve their performance in school, lowered disciplinary action, and led over 20 children to complete a full marathon, and hundreds more to complete their after school training programs. HOPE RUNS also provides service-learning opportunities for international volunteers, and draws on local hires to implement these programs over time. Hope Runs work, based in Kenya, has been featured in such publications as Runner's World, The Sacramento Bee, The Folsom Telegraph, and Competitor.

The proceeds from the 777 fundraising will go to help Hope Runs in its main endeavors: 1) Daily Running Programs in Two Kenyan Orphanages 2) Student Runners Attending International and Local Races 3)Hope Runs University Scholarships - Hope Runs supports the university studies of our runners. 4) Business and Social Entrepreneurship Training Program for Kenyan High School Graduates - First Blog on the Internet Written by Orphans and Vulnerable Children: www.TumainiKids.blogspot.com
